On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of its studio recording, it is with pride that today I publish for the very first time in many years the Mini-CD of Arimonium Rex, super-cult Italian black metal band I was involved in, the very first occult black metal to be formed at the beginning of the 90s in Rome, before the Scandinavian boom, drawing, rather, lymph and inspiration from the masters of satanic metal and black metal of the 80s.
The band was formed in early 1993 by bassist / then singer Arimon (hence the band moniker which means "King of the arimons") and by guitarist Barbatos, immediately marking the demonolatrous concept that has characterized the group throughout its decade of existence.
A rehearsal tape was circulated privately in 1995 in the Roman scene and in the hands of a few individuals familiar with occultism and Satanism, but never officially published.
The summer of 1999 marked the historic meeting with myself, Diabolical Egipan of Okkultum Magnificentia, which gave life to a crucial turning point for the band, thus leading to the recordings of the first official Mini-CD, "Xanay Maku Orozot", in June of 2002, at the Temple Of Noise Studios in Rome (Aborym, Stormlord, Helalyn Flowers...) and published months later on Wotan's Reich label.
The opus in question immediately shows the perfect fusion of the new line-up, introducing a dark and theatrical feeling given by the use of keyboards (performed by Diabolical Egipan, for the occasion rebaptised Aeshma Daeva, thus according to the band's own concept which was based on the merger with one's own guiding demon), highly dramatic and obscure as well as at the service of the concept, together with the band's own technical and melodic guitar work trademark that shows off the band's 80's Heavy Metal roots, now classic (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Death SS) now of Thrash / Death or primordial Black Metal extraction (Mortuary Drape, Rotting Christ, Necromantia), with far-reaching solo solutions. Above all lancinating and theatrical vocals, versatile in terms of timbre and with dark inserts of invocations narrated in Italian.
The large production and the incredible technical contribution also gave new life to the three tracks already present in the 1995 reh. tape: "Arimon Lives ...", "The Violence Of The Hunter (Barbatos)" and "Glory To Great Father".
Despite the great planning implemented by the band, within a year they would have committed their own ritual suicide, which occurred due to both rational and esoteric forces.
A split 7" with Dunkel Nacht made by Maggot Productions comes out posthumously in 2003, containing the last real pearl of Arimonium Rex: the song" Lord of Bloodstained Forests ", recorded in the Samhain of 2002, which would have anticipated the band's first true full-length, largely ready. All the material was unused, if not forgotten, except for a few small portions that would be revived, almost two decades later, in the new course of Okkultum Magnificentia.
This is what remains. A gash in the flat sky of the then Italian black metal, heralding what foreign big bands would do in the following years.
Despite some proposals to re-establish the group, nothing will ever be able to go back to the way it used to be and nothing will ever replace any of the three demon-members. No predictions or hopes of reunion then. But if we read what stands out on the back cover of "Xanay Maku Orozot": "Theirs is an Eternal Time, an Eternal Samadhi. Now They prepare to return ...", then we can delude ourselves a little, or imagine what it was like a seals break for something bigger...
